SU bumps Stump
BATON ROUGE - Southern University officials announced today that Stump Mitchell is out as the school's head football coach.
Mitchell was reassigned to other administrative duties for the remainder of the season. Defensive coordinator Dawson Odums will handle coaching duties.
Rumors swirled earlier today that some university leaders had called for Mitchell to resign after a disappointing 6-0 loss to Mississippi Valley State University last night, which was broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Athletic Director William Broussard recommended Mitchell be reassigned instead this morning, and after it was approved by the school chancellor met with Mitchell in the afternoon.
Mitchell accepted the job as Southern's head coach in Jan. 2010, and was in the last year of his contract. Last night's loss put him at an 0-2 record this year and 6-18 overall with Southern.
Sports 2 will have more on the coaching changes at Southern tonight at 6 and 10.
