SU AgCenters Smoking Cessation Initiative

BATON ROUGE - The Southern AgCenter is kicking-off a statewide quit-smoking campaign aimed at saving lives.

Smoking kills more African Americans every year than car crashes, HIV/AIDS, murder, alcohol and drugs combined. Most of those deaths are attributed to heart disease, cancer and stroke. Even though people can die from all three without smoking, your risk is much greater if you are a smoke.

The goal of the African American Male Cessation Initiative is to help people quit before it's too late.

"81% of African Americans in Louisiana had tried to quit smoking, but only 12% have been successful," Frankie Poland explained this morning on 2une In. "We are targeting the statewide, African American community in order to get the information out because it's important".

The initiative is funded by the Louisiana Smoking Cessation Trust and a grant from the Louisiana Public Health Institute/ The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living.

While events for the initiative will be held statewide, the kickoff in our area is Saturday morning at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. If you attend, you will be given information about the free program the help you kick your smoking habit.
