State wrapping up investigation into mayor's spending

NEW ROADS- The State Inspector General's Office is wrapping up its investigation into questionable spending on city credit cards in New Roads.
The results of the investigation will be turned over to prosecutors shortly. That's when they'll decide if there's enough evidence to press forward with a case against New Roads Mayor Robert Myer.
Myer told WBRZ last year he used the town's credit card to make personal purchases. Things like mattresses, expensive meals and hotel stays were all charged to taxpayers. Myer contends that he reimbursed the city for all of those personal charges.
"My constituents are asking me about it," Pointe Coupee Parish Police Juror Dewey Dukes said.
On Monday, Dukes requested that an item be added to the Police Jury's agenda to request an update from District Attorney Ward on Mayor Robert Myer's investigation.
"If the mayor hasn't done anything wrong, that's fine," Dukes said. "If somethings been done wrong, the public should know either way."
Assistant District Attorney, Tony Clayton says his office had a meeting with the Inspector General a little more than a week ago. At that time the Inspector General's office told the District Attorney's office, their findings should be turned over relatively soon.
Law enforcement sources tell the Investigative Unit, typically if their investigations don't reveal anything, they are dropped in an effort not to waste agencies time.
Two months ago, Myer appeared to not be concerned about what the Inspector General might find. However, as the case wraps up, Myer has gone silent. As we left City Hall, we were told Myer wouldn't be at work today. It's concerning to elected leaders like Dukes who believes the citizens have a right to be in the loop.
"It's very concerning to me because if this is all a hoax, and the mayor didn't do anything, the people should know," Myer said.
The District Attorney's Office said it's weighing several options right now. One could be taking this case to a grand jury. We'll keep you posted once they get that report.
