State Police headed to border

BATON ROUGE- Louisiana State Police are headed to the U.S- Mexican border for a look at where illegals begin their journey into the states, possibly headed to Louisiana.

Col. Mike Edmonson is expected to be in McAllen, Texas, beginning Monday. Edmonson and his team will focus on how drugs are smuggled into the country and also learn more about unaccompanied minors who have been crossing the border by the thousands.

Since WBRZ.com broke this story earlier Friday, leaders released more details about the trip. State House Speaker Chuck Kleckley will accompany Edmonson and a delegation from the Louisiana State Police. The Texas Department of Public Safety will lead the expedition to the border.

"Whether it is illegal drugs, illegal weapons or undocumented immigrants, Louisiana is affected daily by security issues at the Mexico border," said Colonel Edmonson. "We continue to enjoy a strong partnership with our counterparts at Texas DPS who play a critical role in providing us intelligence and situational awareness with regards to border security issues."

Edmonson is frustrated that the federal government won't release information about unaccompanied minors who are staying in Louisiana.  Thursday, it was revealed there are more than a thousand illegal children in the state, staying with sponsors.

"Give us some knowledge, give us the ability to weigh in on weather or not we want those kids coming in here, and if so, are they being taken care of? This gives me a chance to go see first hand, exactly what's coming across and how it's affecting Louisiana," he said.

The trip started as a way to get more information about drug smuggling since there are have been recent busts in the Baton Rouge area where cocaine and heroin were found in the purest form to date.

"What we're seeing coming across the border is 40, 50, 60 percent pure heroin," Edmonson said. "That concerns me, in so many different ways."

This is Edmonson's second trip to the border.
