State considering second Plaquemine Ferry
PLAQUEMINE - The state is considering adding a second ferry in the Plaquemine area.
The current route connects Plaquemine in Iberville Parish with Sunshine in Ascension Parish. Drivers on the west side of the Mississippi River say it's a headache dealing with Baton Rouge traffic.
"We need some options now, and if that's what it is then please put more boats out," said Ann Marionneaux. "People on this side of the river are anxiously waiting for some solutions, because I feel like they'll be no loop or bridge in my life time."
Some drivers use the Plaquemine ferry to avoid bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Horace Wilkinson Bridge. During peak hours about 240 vehicles use the ferry in the morning, and around 450 cars cross in the evening, according to the Department of Transportation and Development. Drivers feel adding a second ferry would speed along the process.
"That would help out a lot on the traffic flow, especially back up in here. Mostly for people getting back and forth from work it will speed up a lot," said Louis Griffen. "If you look at the traffic flow on the bridge in the afternoon coming from the Port Allen side to the Baton Rouge side, with this here it takes away a lot of the traffic jam for people."
Others want a more structural traffic fix like a new bridge across the river.
"It should have been done 10 years ago. It's way past overdue," said Marionneaux. "I mean you would think with the port on this side of the river and with the industry on this side of the river that it would be important to think about that to have done that years ago."
DOTD says there is no timetable on when the evaluation to add another ferry will be done.
