St. Helena parish makes strides in bridge construction
GREENSBURG - St. Helena Parish is coming closer and closer to finishing a project they started at the beginning of the year.
A total of 5 bridges are a part of a project that the parish has started in order to rebuild the old structures.
Residents say the old bridges became dangerous to cross and something needed to be done as soon as possible.
"It was prehistoric and most things that are made in the older days, are made pretty good. In this case, it was just aged and definitely needed to be replaced," said John Marshall, Jr., who lives down the street from one of the complete bridges.
Three of the bridges are already complete and two have yet to be finished.
Parish Administrator, Virginia Bell says the parish received a total of 3.4 million dollars in federal funding as a result of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
From that money, they allocated 1.7 million to be used to rebuild the bridges.
Construction on the remaining bridges is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
