St. Helena Parish gets first storm shelter

GREENSBURG - A much-needed storm shelter is going up in Saint Helena Parish.

The project is years in the making, and is the first ever public storm shelter in the parish.

FEMA is paying for the $800,000 project, which will hold about 300 people. Before this people had to seek refuge from dangerous storms in the Saint Helena High School gymnasium, where conditions aren't the most comfortable.

"The facilities were not shelter-ready but we didn't have any place else. No restrooms, no air conditioning, it was very bad for the citizens," said St. Helena Parish President Major Coleman.

Residents say the shelter is long overdue.

"I always think the roof will come off or just take the house away with us in it," said Rita Hall.

The building will also double as a rec center and should be completed by the end of hurricane season.
