St. Gabriel flooding

SUNSHINE- Nakia Nelson can barely get to her Sunshine home, after heavy rains overnight brought her a rude awakening.

"Water was everywhere, I wasn't even able to get out of the bed the water was so high," Nelson told News 2.

And according to Nelson and her neighbors, it's not the first time this has happened to their community near St. Gabriel.

"In the last six months this house has been flooded twice. Every time it gets a rain it always floods like this," she said.

"When it rains you hear that it's going to rain and you leave your kids at home. You're gonna be at work calling 'how high is the water? Is it flooding?' " Natasha Coates added.

Some residents said they've reached out to city leaders, but haven't seen any results.

"Its seems like someone should do something about it," said Cleveland Johnson. " The biggest mistake is when they put the bayou down, and they put a smaller pipe there. And they can't put the water to drain through here. And it seems like nobody care."

St. Gabriel Mayor Lionel Johnson said the city is working to clean out culverts and widen canals to try to keep flooding from happening again. He estimates waters reached nearly three feet.

But some might not stick around here long enough to see if those improvements work.

"It's a nice place to buy a home, and bring your children up in... but you can't live like this," Nelson said. "I can't afford to keep buying living room sets and TV's and beds."
