Southeastern vs Northwestern State Baseball Game 1

HAMMOND, La. - Northwestern State struck first in the battle for first place in the Southland Conference, taking a 3-1 win Thursday in the series opener over Southeastern Louisiana at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.


Northwestern State (17-11, 9-3 Southland) took an early lead and starter Adam Oller (5-1) locked down the Lion bats late.


Southeastern (22-9, 9-4 Southland) tried to rally in the middle innings, but the Demon right-hander retired the final nine batters of the game on the way to his third complete game of the season.


Second baseman David Fry knocked his second home run of the season, a two-out solo shot in the second inning, to give Northwestern State an early lead.


The Demons added two more runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 3-0 over Southeastern. Caleb Dugas ripped a one-out double into the left-field corner. Third baseman Matthew Alford followed with a double down the right-field line to drive in Dugas. With two outs, shortstop Joel Atkinson tripled to right, plating Alford with Northwestern State's final run of the game.


Southeastern threatened in the fifth. Kennon Menard led off the inning with a single deep in the hole at short. After stealing second base, Menard advanced to third on a ground out. Brett Hoffman was hit by a breaking pitch, putting runners on the corners with one out. Oller worked out of the jam by fanning back-to-back hitters.


The Lions finally broke through in the sixth. Jacob Seward led off the inning with a single to short and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, he scored on Kevin Carr's double to right-center. Menard followed with a single through the right side, but Dugas' throw from right beat Carr to the plate for the final out of the inning.


Oller scattered five hits and fanned nine batters. He hit one and did not issue a walk. Tate Scioneaux (5-2) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs in seven innings of work.


Southeastern has lost consecutive games for just the third time this season.

In the second game of the series, the Lions will send junior right-hander Jake Johnson (5-0, 1.86) to the mound Friday at 6 p.m. against Northwestern State right-hander Josh Oller (5-0, 4.15).


Friday's game is Light It Up Blue for Autism Awareness with all fans and students encouraged to wear blue to "light it up blue" for Autism awareness. Partners from SOAR and Autism Answers of Louisiana will be in attendance to raise awareness during the game. Baseball players will wear puzzle-piece ribbons.


It is also a $5 Friday. All adult general admission tickets are only $5. Along with the reduced ticket price, the concession stand will offer a combo special for $5.
