MAMOU - Lafayette Chief of Police Jim Craft said tonight that they believe remains found in an Evangeline Parish cemetery are those of missing college student Mickey Shunick.

Craft made the statements at the Lafayette Parish Council meeting, according to The Advertiser newspaper.

"Today, we developed information on the possible location of some human remains in Evangeline Parish and we are on that scene as we speak," Craft said. "Those remains do appear to be those of Mickey Shunick, and her family has been notified. We have a lot more processing and scientific testing to do to make sure."

News 2 earlier learned authorities were searching land near state highways 10 and 13 for the missing student's body.  Multiple sources also confirmed to News 2 Shunick's body was found in that area.

Tonight, Shunick's family released this statement to KATC-TV in Lafayette:

"We appreciate all the efforts of the law enforcement agencies, Searchers and Volunteers. We know that the media has reported that Mickey Shunick's body was found in Evangeline Parish, however, as of right now, and until an official press release is made by the proper officials, we cannot report, either way, that a body found was that of Mickey."

Shunick disappeared in May after leaving a friend's home on her bicycle.  Authorities arrested Brandon Scott Lavergne, a registered sex offender, back in July in suspicion of kidnapping and first-degree murder for her death. A grand jury later indicted him on the same charges.

News 2 will have more on this story as it develops.
