Sorrento still ticking two weeks without police
SORRENTO - It's been two weeks since police have patrolled Sorrento's streets, but not much has changed except the name on the side of the law enforcement vehicles.
Sorrento's police department recently lost its insurance coverage, and is down to just two officers. Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley promised to provide law enforcement to the Town of Sorrento through the end of the year, while the chief of police and his assistant figure out how to create a viable police force.
Though the sheriff's office has provided adequate protection the past two weeks, some people still want to see the Sorrento Police Department return.
"The small town is wonderful, because the chief has always been good to me here and I've always felt safe in Sorrento, the response time especially has been wonderful," said Judy Starrett, who owns Louisiana Pottery in Sorrento.
The chief will formalize two resignations and two layoffs during the town council meeting tonight.
