Sorrento PD chief sits on resignation decision
SORRENTO - The people of Sorrento voted to abolish their police department, but current police chief Fern Barnett says she hasn't made a decision to resign or not yet.
She released this statement Wednesday: "I gave the residents a chance to make a choice. They made their choice, now I have to make a choice."
Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley said his deputies will take over law enforcement for Sorrento, no matter Barnett's decision.
Some people have hopes Barnett won't resign.
"I don't see her resigning. This is her hometown, and she'll fight for it," said Tiffany Corkern, a resident of Sorrento.
The Sorrento council will discuss options for Barnett at their meeting Thursday evening.
