Some shoppers skip "Black Friday" for "Small Business Saturday"

BATON ROUGE- The days following Thanksgiving are major shopping days across the country, and usually pay off for the big chain stores.

However, going to locally owned stores and small boutiques on Saturday is becoming popular with shoppers who are looking for deals, but want to skip Black Friday crowds to get them.

Karen Graham tells News 2 she avoids malls and large stores during the holiday season.

"It's just too crowed," she says.

"We don't do the Friday, but we do the Saturday and the Sunday," adds Janis Johnson.

According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses, nearly half of small business owners are starting to slash prices for what's being called Small Businesses Saturday.

"A lot of people don't want to deal with the lines, the craziness," says Lindsay Shaeffer, sales associate at Febe.

With an estimated 147 million people hitting the stores this weekend, several shoppers say they're glad to have more options.

"This gives you a really good opportunity to walk around and find different kinds of clothes and gifts," says shopper Janet Chighizola.

Small business owners say holiday shopping can account for nearly 20 percent of their yearly sales.
