Soldier surprises wife at graduation
BATON ROUGE - A soldier home early from his tour in Kuwait surprised his wife at Southern University Thursday.
Glendon Sanders, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, has spent the last seven months in the Middle East. His wife, Zachyle, was getting ready for Southern's graduation and was planning to accept her husband's degree for him. But, Glendon spent 30 hours aboard a plane and landed in South Louisiana Tuesday. Since, he's been catching up on sleep and preparing for Thursday's big surprise.
"Jitters, butterflies, getting ready," he said. "Happy to get back and spend this day with my wife."
With flowers in his arms, Glendon walked briskly to his wife, who wasn't suspecting a thing. Tears of joy and a hug of comfort followed.
Zachyle is graduating Friday with a degree in rehabilitation services. They'll be able to celebrate their accomplishments together after they walk across the stage at Southern.
"I'm just speechless," said Zachyle. "I'm just happy to see him, so happy."
The couple have been married for 14 months and keep in touch primarily through text and email. This is a graduation neither one will forget.
"He's always surprising me, but I would never dream of anything like this," said Zachyle.
Glendon will be spending time in Baton Rouge before returning to Kuwait to finish his tour. Check out the emotional video by clicking here.
