Shooting victims remembered in memorial services
LAFAYETTE - Two young women were memorialized with flowers, candles, and prayers on Friday evening.
Jillian Johnson and Mayci Breaux were killed in a shooting at The Grand movie theater in Lafayette.
Jillian Johnson, 33, was a businesswoman with shops in Lafayette and New Orleans. Flowers and loving notes adorned the entrance to her business in Lafayette. Mayci Breaux, 21, was a radiology student slated to begin working at Lafayette General Hospital in a few weeks.
Her family had a vigil honoring her in her hometown, Franklin, LA. Breaux went to the movie with her boyfriend, Thursday night to see "Trainwreck." Her boyfriend was also shot and he is recovering from his injuries.
Mayci's family says she wanted to change the world, and was one of the nicest people you would ever meet.
"When you get that kind of news, you just say, no that doesn't happen here. That happens to someone else, someone else's family, to someone else's friends," Breaux's aunt, Anne Oestriecher said. "Obviously, when you lose a family member this young, at anytime, it's tragic, but when it's something shocking and as senseless as this..we don't want to turn this into a platform...we don't want this to turn into anything other than an opportunity to celebrate Mayci's life, and hope this doesn't ever happen to anyone else."
Two other vigils were held in the Lafayette area honoring the victims of the shooting. One was held in the quad on the UL-Lafayette campus. The other was held downtown.
Governor Bobby Jindal joined ULL students and other community members wanting to show support for the victims. The Grand theater is only about two miles from the university's campus.
Another vigil in downtown Lafayette prayed for healing after the tragedy. It was held at the federal court house. People in attendance wanted to show their support for the people who died and the nine who were hurt in the attack.
