Sheriff: suspect confesses in gruesome killing
PLAQUEMINE - Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said the man connected to an execution-style killing confessed to committing the crime.
Stassi said authorities arrested Detrell Scott, 22, on suspicion of first-degree murder and armed robbery Wednesday, hours after the victim was found dead. More than 25 people were interviewed about what happened between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Investigators believe Scott shot and killed Kye Boudreaux, who was found on his knees at his camp near Plaquemine, early Wednesday morning. Stassi said Scott and Boudreaux were distant friends.
"He loved to bring people out to the camp with him and he picked the wrong person to ride with today," said Stassi.
Boudreaux's boat was spotted loose in the nearby river, and his truck was found burned in a field in the area. Investigators believe Scott killed Boudreaux, used his boat to get back to shore then drove his truck to a field and tried to set it on fire. Stassi also says the gun used in the shooting belonged to Boudreaux.
"He used his boat to come back to the landing," said Stassi, "Also used his truck to make his escape back to town."
Stassi said Boudreaux's family made the gruesome discovery, and this is difficult because he knows them personally.
"When we were standing out here at 6 [Wednesday morning] with my classmate, it really rings home," Stassi said.
Margaret Businelle knew the victim's family.
"Kye was a fun loving family oriented young man," Businelle said. "He was devoted to his parents, had his life in his hands."
His friends told News 2 he just started working for Dow Chemical and had his life on track.
"Why do something so senseless and if you did this, own up to it and turn yourself in," Businelle said before there was word of an arrest.
Scott faces charges of first degree murder and armed robbery. The victim's wallet and money were missing from the camp.
As of this post, there was still no clear reason why Scott allegedly committed the crime.
