NEW ROADS - When it comes to animals, one deputy is going beyond the call of duty, to care for two horses seized by the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office last week.

Deputy Jordan Cannon brought home two horses she helped seize from a property in Maringouin. The owner, Matthew Kent, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Aside from being malnourished, Cannon says one of the horses has serious injuries on its neck. According to her, the halter that goes over the horse's head and neck, had become embedded into the skin.

"It's heartbreaking I mean it's just like dealing with an innocent child or an elderly person, someone that can't help themselves," Cannon said.

"Momma" and "Pappa", as Cannon now calls them, are staying on her property until the Humane Society picks them up.

Cannon says she's done this before, and hopes it inspires others to not look the other way when they see an animal that needs help.

"I'm going to make a promise to them," Cannon said. "Even though they don't know what a promise is, but I will find them a home. That's for sure."
