Sheriff blames ZIP code thugs for latest killing
GONZALES- Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley blames the people responsible for the latest murder in the parish on what he calls "ZIP code thugs."
According to investigators, Gerald Wilkins was shot execution-style on LV Road last week. A team of detectives determined that suspects Calvin Williams and Cecil Beals knew the victim, and all were from Baton Rouge.
"All the players involved were ZIP code thugs," Sheriff Jeff Wiley said. "People you read about and fear in certain areas of permeated crime in Baton Rouge."
Beals is currently in custody, but Williams is still on the run. Williams is a convicted felon who has been arrested 21 times since 1993, according to Sheriff Wiley, including for attempted murder and first degree murder. Beals is also a convicted felon who has been arrested 29 times since 1978, according to Wiley, including for burglary, theft and forgery.
"We don't want it here," Wiley said. "I'm glad we made an arrest. We're looking for another one."
Wiley believes a broken system failed these men to allow them to still be out on the streets.
"In effect yes, you have to define the system," Wiley said. "It's not just sheriffs, chiefs, district attorneys and judges, but it's the community. Witnesses, jurors, all of the system there. I'll let the public decide who's ultimately at fault."
If you can help detectives find Calvin Williams, call 911.
