Sewer water floods apartments
LIVINGSTON- A group of elderly residents in Livingston Parish are living in filth since sewer water continues to flood their apartments due to improperly installed sewer lines and faulty pumps.
The latest flood at the Red Oak Apartment complex was blamed on rain and power outages. Residents say they don't care what the issue is, they just want it fixed.
"I don't think it's high on anyone's priority list," said Ronda Cormier, a resident at Red Oak. "The water is everywhere when it floods and sometimes my rugs will actually float up off the floor, there will be that much water."
The sewage line beneath their complex is a gravity pipe feeding into a forced pump line. If any pump along the side of their complex goes out, the tenants' tubs, toilets and floors are flooded with waste water.
"One thing you never do is tie a gravity line into a force main," said Livingston Mayor Derral Jones. "It was installed incorrectly, there's no question about it."
Mayor Jones says starting Monday he will fix their pipes so if a pump is to ever fail again, the residents will stay dry.
"I don't know exactly how we're going to do it," Mayor Jones promised, "or how we're going to get permission to dig on their property. But it's going to happen, and I'm going to make it happen one way or the other."
