Senate approves Juban Crossing bill
BATON ROUGE- A bill creating a new tax district at a proposed retail center is Livingston Parish advances.
There's been little activity at the Juban Crossing site for months. The retail center was first announced in 2005. The plan involves a two cent sales tax dedicated to infrastructure improvements around the development.
Attorney Scott Crawford testified in support of the bill. He says without the tax district, developers really cannot move forward. The money cannot be used to build stores. Crawford says it will be easier to get the big box stores involved in the site if the bill gets full legislative approval.
Homeowers like John Campanile say the development is part of the reason he purchased his home near the site. He is optimistic the center will be an economic benefit plus increase home values,
Parish officials say the bill does not require a public vote because there are no homes within the development. Parish voters rejected a tax district bill for the site two years ago.
