Second discussion canceled about huge zoning issue

ST. GABRIEL - For the second day in a row, city government took a bizarre turn when a city council discussion about a controversial rezoning request was deferred to another meeting.

Wednesday, a planning and zoning commission meeting was canceled because too few members showed up to hear concerns from both sides about rezoning some 2,000 acres inside city limits. The property, along La. 30 from the East Baton Rouge/Iberville Parish line to deep inside the incorporated area of this quiet town, is currently zoned residential. The owners want it rezoned for industrial.

Many residents are worried rezoning the property will lead to a large plant.

So many people showed up at the planning and zoning meeting before it was canceled, a city official threatened to require a picture ID with a St. Gabriel address to enter the next meeting. Ahead of the council meeting Thursday, fire fighters set the capacity for the room at 154 people.

A tweet from WBRZ reporter Brittany Weiss shows seats were taken and people were standing up. Some in attendance planned to speak.

The rezoning issue was rescheduled for November 12th.
