Search for police chief narrowing down

BATON ROUGE - Cops in Baton Rouge continue to fight crime in the capital city, but are still without a permanent police chief to run the show.

The search for the next chief is narrowing down. 11 officers passed the civil service board exam with a 75 or higher.

Interim police chief Carl Dabadie is still in the running. He was appointed by Mayor Kip Holden after the mayor fired former chief Dewayne White.

Councilwoman Tara Wicker says she thinks the city's next police chief needs a strong backbone.

"When the mayor is looking at really making that final selection of the chief, definitely someone with an open mind, able to follow rules but is independent to make own decisions," said Wicker.

15 people took the test, meaning four didn't make the cut.

Mayor Holden says he will not talk about the candidates until he's looked at test results and talked to people in the community.
