Search for new Denham Springs Police chief begins

DENHAM SPRINGS - The search for an interim police chief is underway in Denham Springs after the firing of Chief Scott Jones and Captain Steve Kistler.

Both Jones and Kistler were fired by the Denham Springs Council Thursday night after an investigating committee looked into the handling of a domestic violence case involving councilman Chris Davis. Denham Springs leaders said that the findings in the report would be made public, but that has not happened yet.

Residents who spoke with News 2 say they're on the fence about what to make of the situation.

"I couldn't make my mind up one way or the other without knowing what the committee found out and reported back to the council," said Charles Crowder.

As for the next chief, people say they want someone who will fit right in to run the department. They would also like a wide-open search.

"Someone who takes care of all the people and fights out the crime and is treating everyone fairly," said Connie Hitzman.

"If anyone in the department that is remotely qualified they should be considered, but they shouldn't limit it to that by no means. They should go outside the department too," said Crowder.

The city of Denham Springs is also searching for a permanent chief.
