School fires teacher in student sex case
BATON ROUGE - School administrators fired a Scotlandville band instructor Friday who's accused of having sex with one of his students.
Deputies charged Robert M. Lewis, 30, with forcible rape and prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student Thursday night. Lewis has been on paid leave since December and administrators fired him Friday afternoon.
Investigators said Lewis came onto the 17-year-old student after taking her to a function in November. The student told investigators she rejected his advances, but he persisted through text messages.
"She said she began texting him that night and then later in November, while her parents were out of town she said he brought her food and then forcibly raped her," said Casey Rayborn Hicks with EBRSO.
Deputies said Lewis had sex with the student again, and that the first incident was described as "forcible." Both incidences happened when the girl's parents were not home and while the second encounter was described as consensual, deputies say that doesn't make it legal.
"Obviously it is very concerning when you have a teacher or someone in a position of power or authority and I think that's why we have that statute in place that makes it a crime, whether the student is of legal age or not," said Hicks.
Today investigators said they were continuing to look into the possibility that Lewis did the same thing to other students he had contact with and ask anyone with information to contact the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.
