School board member details squalor at Baker School
BAKER - A school board member in Baker claims her complaints about deplorable conditions inside the alternative school have fallen on deaf ears.
The alternative school is for students with behavior problems and sits on Baker High School's campus in 'T' buildings. School board member Doris Alexander told WBRZ she has detailed the problems at two different meetings in the fall. Tonight, she's frustrated that nothing has been done.
Pictures obtained by the WBRZ Investigative Unit show filthy sinks, crumbling ceiling tiles, paint peeling, and dirty doors.
"Maybe now someone will take those students' complaints seriously," Alexander said.
Alexander said recently she has been getting exhausted repeating herself.
"Everyone is tired," Alexander said. "They are sick and tired of being sick and tired."
Fredrick Gross is familiar with the school's problems.
"It's a joke," Gross said. "Mold, ceiling falling, beaucoup dirty bathrooms."
We took those concerns to Superintendent Ulysses Joseph and asked why nothing was done if Alexander complained about this last year.
"It was brought up at a school board meeting," Joseph said. "She asked me personally if I would make sure it was done. That time we did. But it has to be an ongoing thing."
Joseph said the situation has already been addressed with the school's principal. He toured the school today and said what he saw was inexcusable.
"I'm disappointed because those bathrooms should be cleaned daily," Joseph said. "You don't just walk in the afternoon and clean them up. They should be cleaned all day."
Although Alexander is grateful something will get done now, she wishes it would have been handled months ago.
"I don't know what the problem is," Alexander said. "I'm on the board, and I don't know."
Joseph said a work order will be turned in to fix the crumbling ceiling tiles this week. WBRZ will be following up to see if the work is completed.
