Salt dome cavern owners getting audited
GONZALES - Ascension Parish Assessor M.J. Smiley Jr. says companies will get audited for not paying taxes on salt dome caverns.
Smiley said they're looking at 20 unreported salt dome caverns in Ascension that belong to four companies; Cheveron, Exxon, Motiva and Shell. They're also looking into how many years in back taxes the companies may owe.
"We're looking at millions of dollars, and these millions of dollars can help our schools, help our sheriffs office, and help all the different entities of government," explained Smiley.
Residents we spoke to say the companies should be held responsible for the taxes.
"I feel that they should be taxed because they're working like everyone else, the same as every other business, so the salt ground above and below ground should pay a percentage of taxes," said Shirley Osborne.
"The action that we want is to make sure that they pay their fair share of inventory and improvement taxes," Smiley said.
Exxon issued a statement saying they will comply with state law.
