Road construction continues in Ascension Parish

ASCENSION PARISH - Department of Transportation and Development continued working to improve a seven-mile stretch of Airline Hwy today from LA-22 to LA-74.

Lane closures will continue to occur on the northbound and southbound directions while crews make way for turn lanes and pave the roadway.

The main goal is to make the roads safer as it transitions into a developing area. DOTD will create a safer environment by closing lesser used cross-overs, adding dedicated left-hand turn lanes and laying a grated top surface to allow proper water drainage.

"You have less water sitting up on top of the road, which helps with the friction issue and makes it safer for people to drive," said DOTD representative Brendan Rush.

To help get rid of some of Airline's congestion and prevent accidents, DOTD is constructing left-hand turn lanes for those making permitted left-hand turns.

"We want to get drivers out of that moving lane and get them over to the side," said Rush. "Where they can take their turn when they feel most comfortable."

Drivers in the area say construction has been going on a long time, but they'll be happy with the end result.

"I'm glad they patched the road up, because it used to be bumpy and rocky," said Tamera Vessel.

"It's going to be nice, it's just, it's taking so long," said Irene Bridges.

The project has an estimated cost of $9.1 million in state and federal funding and will continue into next year.
