Residents enjoy Labor Day weekend after False River reopens

POINTE COUPEE PARISH – False River had been closed for weeks due to the high water levels and flood debris, but now that officials reopened the River residents can continue on with their Labor Day traditions.

The closure of the river came as terrible news to residents wanting to enjoy their three-day weekend on the water. Some held on to hope that they could still get some well-deserved fun.

"I woulda been really upset because this is a every year thing," Taylor Prevost, visitor of False River, said.

"I would find something else to do, but I would have been upset but this is a every year thing so I have to be here," Prevost said.

The news of the river reopening came better late than never for eager boaters. Wildlife and Fisheries agents patrolled False River Saturday morning and made the decision to reopen the boat launches as the water levels had gone down just enough for recreational boating.

For many, the weekend is a getaway from their current worries following the recent historic flooding in the state.

"I think it is a nice break and I hope they can enjoy it, people are probably still cleaning out their house, people are just getting in because the water was really high, so I hope they can enjoy because we need to celebrate this weekend," Julie Connelly, resident, said.

Bars and restaurants along False River will also be open for Labor Day. For more information on river openings and closures, visit pcpolicejury.org to check water levels daily.
