Republicans question reason behind financial records request

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's Republican Party is blasting the legislative auditor's office after both the GOP and the state Democratic Party were asked to turn over financial statements to comply with a long-overlooked law.

Republican officials were angered by the request and accused the office of targeting conservatives. Democrats simply turned over the documents.

Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera dismissed the GOP claims, saying that the request for documents was required once the law was brought to its attention.

The request stems from a little-noticed law requiring both parties to file yearly reports with the legislative auditor's office.

Purpera told The Times-Picayune that auditors weren't aware of the requirement until Republican Rep. Nick Lorusso sent an email asking whether the state Republican Party had filed its report.
