Report: Gerald had been drinking at golf course before deadly wreck

BATON ROUGE - A State Police report said Brett Gerald, the man accused of driving drunk and killing seven people in a wreck, told investigators he'd been drinking for several hours at a local golf course.

The report says following the crash, Gerald told investigators he was at the Copper Mill golf course drinking Miller Lite, and that he started drinking at 3 p.m. and stopped at 7 p.m.

When asked how much he drank, he told investigators "six or seven", and "less than a 12 pack".  Investigators also noted he had slurred speech, and his eyes "were very red and appeared glassy."

Gerald pleaded not guilty to seven counts of vehicular homicide.  Five people were killed initially in the May 30 crash, and two more died later at local hospitals.

Today, family members of the victims said they were sorry for Gerald, who had previously been arrested three times for DWI.  He only received one conviction, and was cited for second offense DWI in the recent crash.

"The system failed Mr. Gerald and my family," said John Gaines Jr. "Because if they would've stopped this the first time, the second time.. You know..this wouldn't have happened to my family."
