BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says George Rodrigue is leaving a legacy larger than the "Blue Dog" paintings that made the artist famous.

Rodrigue, a southwest Louisiana native, died of cancer Saturday in Houston. He was 69.

The family says funeral arrangements will be announced Monday.

Jindal says Rodrigue's work "is iconic and uniquely Louisiana," making the artist an ambassador for the state. The governor says there are countless stories and examples of Rodrigue's charity work to help people in the state.

Jindal notes that in addition to the many Blue Dog canvases and paintings of Cajun life, Rodrigue painted images of world leaders such as former presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
