Rain doesn't stop 9/11 services in Ascension Parish

ASCENSION PARISH - Midday rain showers forced Ascension Parish authorities and leaders to change the way they honored those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Instead of raising the flag above fire trucks parked alongside Airline Highway, the group remained inside Fire District #1 where they prayed and shared a moment of silence.

"We just want to remember them," said Chief James LeBlanc, of the St. Amant Fire Department, "we don't ever want the families of these people that were lost, to think that we're not thinking about them, every day and especially every September 11th."

Those who serve our community, remember the day their New York counterparts died serving theirs.

"In my fire department alone I have 60 members," said LeBlanc, "these guys lost 343 firefighters in one day, that is more than all the firefighters in Ascension Parish put together."
