Public asked to vote on tiger cub names
BATON ROUGE - The BREC Zoo posted potential names Wednesday for its two female Malayan tiger cubs and asked for the public to vote for their favorites.
Hundreds of nominations were submitted in late November to the zoo's social media pages, according to Zoo Director Phil Frost. The zoo's animal staff selected their top four for final consideration.
"It's fantastic to see this level of excitement about our cubs from the community and we hope our cubs will each get great names to start off the new year," he said.
The cubs were born to the Zoo's female Malayan tiger, which came to the Zoo in 2009 from the Fort Worth Zoo, and the Zoo's male Malayan tiger, which arrived from the Little Rock Zoo in 2012. The two cubs represent the fifth and sixth Malayan tiger cubs born in the U.S. this year.
The Malayan subspecies was first recognized in 2004. With an estimated 500 or fewer existing in the wild, they are currently identified as Endangered.
The final names include:
* Darma - "Duty" in Malay
* Hadiah - "Gift" in Malay
* Berani - "Brave" in Malay
* Kayu Merah - "Red Stick" in Malay
The two names with the most votes after 5 p.m. Jan. 9 will be given to the cubs. People can vote online or mail their choices to 3601 Thomas Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70807. Mailed votes should be sent with attention to Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo.
The people who submitted the winning names will also receive a complimentary Gold-level adoption of the tiger cubs through the Zoo's Adopt an Animal program, as well as a Household membership to the Zoo.
