Proposed law about eyes gets close look
BATON ROUGE - There's a debate at the Louisiana State Capitol that has optometrists and ophthalmologists pleading their cases.
House Bill 527 would allow optometrists to perform certain procedures that are currently only allowed to be performed by ophthalmologists.
Optometrists say it's about performing simple procedures in a safe and cost-effective way. Ophthalmologists say it's about safety and quality of care.
Louisiana State Representative Frank Hoffman (R-West Monroe) introduced the bill. He argues that the issue is about access and says that some rural areas of Louisiana don't have access to ophthalmologists.
The issue will be debated by the entire State House of Representatives.
