Proposed bill to monitor work release inmates

Related Story

BATON ROUGE- Legislators are looking for ways to make the state's work release program more accountable after multiple inmates have escaped.

Those inmates include people like Lynndrick Huey who has avoided custody since leaving his job earlier this month. Huey was picked up from his work release assignment by Erica Williams. Williams allegedly tried to return Huey before the van returned, but it was later discovered he missed the van. Huey was later taken to New Orleans by an unknown person, Williams told authorities.

The new proposed law would require the Department Of Corrections to closely monitor and create a system that would report numbers to the legislature each year. Numbers include how many inmates work in the program, the wages each inmate earns, the maximum amount of inmates allowed to participate in each program, and the overall costs associated with work release.

House Bill 817 is scheduled to be heard on the House floor Monday afternoon.
