Proposal could let colleges raise their own tuition

BATON ROUGE - Tuition at four-year universities could go up in Louisiana under a new proposal before the Board of Regents.

If approved, the proposal will give four-year institutions the same power to set tuition like two-year technical and community colleges have, in accordance with the Board of Regents tuition policy.

The Louisiana Board of Regents says this will allow for market-driven tuition in the state. Some students fear what the change could mean for them.

"I paid for college through loans and out of pocket. Me and my mom came together and put money towards my college. So I think it would be harder on our pockets to pay for more tuition," said LSU student Monique King.

"It's real different, especially with tuition... going up every semester. So it's been real hard paying out of pocket and everything," said Southern University student Andrew Hebert.

Tomorrow, the Board of Regents will vote on moving the proposal forward. If the board approves the change, the Legislature still has to sign off next spring.
