Prescription drug distribution a "serious" problem for parish

IBERVILLE PARISH - Thursday morning, police arrested dozens of suspected drug dealers while many of them were still in their pajamas.

Just before 6:30 a.m. Iberville Sheriff's deputies, Plaquemine Police and the state drug task force, L.E.A.D., began busting people for selling prescription drugs.

"We're going to do everything we can to stop the meds from flowing into Iberville Parish," Sheriff Brett Stassi said.

Police arrested 33 people by 8 a.m. which was a part an eight-month-long-undercover investigation. A grand jury indicted 52 people for selling prescription drugs. Police continue to look for those suspects on the street.

"You're down here in these different areas, small communities, and it takes a while to work yourself into these positions where you can make these buys," Stassi said.

People will often get medication such as Loratab and Oxycodone from doctors legally only to sell them on the streets.

One man with cancer was arrested and accused of selling morphine patches out of his trailer.
