Powerhouse Gym not close to opening in BR

BATON ROUGE- Inside the new Powerhouse Gym on Sherwood Forest, there's not much to brag about. Construction is at a standstill as contractors wait for a building permit.

Connie Olah, the owner, says that's because her former contractor dropped the ball.

"He came in and signed a contract where he was supposed to provide us with stamped blue prints and permits and we never got those," said Olah.

According to city records, Scott Bernard, the former contractor, did apply for a building permit in November and then began some work.

"Actually doing everything that we could possibly do before the permits were issued," said Bernard. "[I] submitted the blue prints to the city parish, met with city officials down there, applied for the permits, paid for the permits, paid for the permit review but no permits have been issued, ever."

A stop work order was issued, in December, when DPW learned a new contractor was working without a permit, just weeks away from the opening date.

"We do regret that, we were hoping to be opened in January, but all of this came to light in December," said Olah.

Since then, Olah and Bernard have parted ways, but Olah is confident construction will start soon.

"We're offering everybody, just hang in there and 10 days after we open if they're not satisfied, we'll cancel their contract," said Olah.

Olah says once they have a permit it should only take 30 days to complete the gym, but Bernard says that's a stretch considering the work that needs to be done. According to DPW the gym still needs to submit revised plans that comply with building codes before it can get it's permit.
