Police jury vs parish council
ST. FRANCISVILLE- Members of the police jury in West Feliciana approved an election for October that will elect a parish president.
It is the first move dealing with home rule charter since the change in government was approved by voters last year.
"The home rule charter was approved by the voters but the jury is taking a stance against what the people voted for it," said Becky Hilliard. Some residents, like Hilliard, are upset the changes are not happening fast enough. They believe the police jury is moving slow to protect itself.
"The police jury system is compromised of laws made up by legislators and house. The home rule charter is made by people. The people have a say so in the government," Hilliard said.
"Some people do have concerns about it. Particularly some of the jurors. They didn't feel like the voters were informed of everything prior to the election," said Ricky Lambert the police jury president.
A lawsuit could allow voters to reverse the original election. There is a hearing about the suit Wednesday.
