Police juror proposes cutting three members

POINTE COUPEE - A member of the Pointe Coupee Police Jury wants to give three of his fellow jurors the boot.

On Tuesday, Justin Cox proposed cutting the police jury from 12 members to nine. He hopes this will allow the jury to better function as a unit as well as alleviate recent financial struggles.

"We do not need 12 jurors," Cox said. "We need to make cuts starting at the top, cut the excess fat. We have a detention center with an $800,000 deficit on the books. We have aging equipment that need desperate repair and replacement. We have buildings that need repair and replacement as well."

He says eliminating three jurors could potentially save the parish $60,000 a year in salaries.

Many residents and jury members said they already have a system that works and, with a $19 million budget ,they don't think an additional $60,000 is worth the loss of three members.
