Police identify, cite drivers in I-10 wreck

BATON ROUGE - Police identified and issued citations to two drivers in the crash which caused a chemical spill and closed I-10 in Baton Rouge earlier this week.

Cpl. L'Jean McKneely said two wrecks caused the pile-up and spill around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday on I-10 East near the I-10/12 split.

The first wreck happened when a car crashed into an 18-wheeler, then hit the retaining walls and flipped onto its top. The driver of the car, 23-year-old Delmar Fernandez of Houston, Tex., was cited for careless operation and not
having a driver's license.

McKneely said the second wreck happened when an 18-wheeler hauling iso-butane stopped for the first wreck, and was rear-ended by another big rig driven by Timothy Kennedy, 36, of Magnolia, Miss. He was cited for following too close.

That crash caused the tanker to start leaking iso-butane onto the interstate, which led authorities to shut down that portion of I-10. Hazmat crews later chose to burn off the chemical with a controlled "vent and burn" of the tanker. They said it couldn't safely be removed from the truck because of damage done to the tanker in the wreck.

The wreck and spill closed I-10 for more than 24 hours, and led to numerous traffic problems across Baton Rouge.
