GEISMAR - State Police said it appears a plant fire that injured two people Thursday ignited when a seal broke on a valve.

The blaze started around 6:30 p.m. and was contained by 9:30. The fire was out by 10 p.m. Overnight, crews were expected to douse the equipment with water to keep it cool.

The incident happened at the Renewable Energy Facility near the intersection of Highway 73 and Highway 30. Roads were closed in the area shortly after the emergency, but reopened later.

"There is no off-site exposure," State Police spokesperson JB Slaton said. Slaton added, crews were monitoring pressure and gauges and were expecting to get inside the facility once things reached normal and safe levels.

The two people were treated for burns and are expected to recover.

DEQ sent a crew to monitor air levels, the agency said.
