Pennington conducting MRE ration research
BATON ROUGE - The Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge is helping keep our soldiers well-nutritioned through research and development of MREs.
The old "Made Ready to Eat" meals helped troops eat on the move, but scientists found the boots on the ground weren't getting the nutrition they needed. Many meals had to be heated with self-heating bags, so wartime fighters went for easier and quicker options which caused them to miss out on needed carbs, protein and fat.
That's why scientists are adapting the food to fit the lifestyle. They've zapped apple sauce with more nutrition, added more protein bars, meat pockets and beef sticks, as well as caffeinated gum.
Pennington just signed an agreement with Department of Defense to continue their research for the next three years. Check out the video for more information.
