Pecan harvest coming in despite weather
NEW ROADS - The holiday season is here, and with it comes pecan season.
Steve Bergeron from H.J. Bergeron Pecan Shelling company said this year's crops are a few weeks late in its harvest.
"There's a huge crop out there. But the problem being that since we had a late spring, cold spring and it was late, Pecans are still green in the tree. Usually this time most of them are on the ground but there's still a lot left in trees."
But that won't stop them from getting pecans to buyers.
"So when we're through harvesting because of our cold storage facilities, we still crack until April and sometimes into May," said Bergeron.
Costs for pecans this year are also down about 30 percent.
