Parish to hold sinkhole update tonight

BAYOU CORNE - Parish authorities scheduled a briefing tonight to update people in the Bayou Corne community about recent developments concerning a large sinkhole which prompted an evacuation.

The meeting is tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the unified command post at the Sportsman's Landing in Bayou Corne.

Last night Texas Brine said their exploratory well into a nearby brine cavern found damage to the cavern, which they said was believed to have been caused by local seismic activity. The sinkhole appeared last month on their property, and the brine cavern is believed responsible for it and bubbling in nearby bayous which had been going on for months.

"The answers provided by Texas Brine, to me and most people, we feel is just a bunch of B.S.," said resident John Achee.

Parish authorities issued a statement early this morning that said they didn't agree with the conclusion, and will "continue to look to Texas Brine for accountability and evacuee assistance."

"It's going to take some investigating to determine if seismic activity, or did they mine too close to the outer wall... there's lots of investigation," said parish emergency manager John Boudreaux.

News 2's Adrian Pittman was in Assumption Parish today, and will have an update on the sinkhole investigation tonight at 5 and 6.
