Parish files injunction to reopen RR crossings

AMITE - Tangipahoa Parish's Fire District 1 station has all the equipment they need to respond to emergency medical and fire calls - they even have a live alligator.

What they didn't have was an official notification that DOTD was going to tear up three railroad crossings Saturday morning.

"One of the most unusual situations that I, personally, have seen based on normal operations," said Bruce Cutrer, Dist. 1 fire chief.

The parish filed an injunction Wednesday to reopen two of the crossings, one at Capace Road and another at Rev. J. White Road.

Cutrer said they were lucky they heard about the closings through local chatter, and were able to plot alternate routes.

One of them was tested Tuesday, when a medical call brought them to the closed Capace Road crossing.

"We went the alternate route, Acadian ambulance showed up at the Capace crossing. They were not aware that the crossing had been blocked off," said Cutrer.

The call turned out to be non-life threatening, but Cutrer said that for a first responder, a few minutes could mean the difference between life and death.

The Village of Tangipahoa is holding a meeting tonight, and is expected to file an injunction to reopen a third crossing, on Babb Street, Thursday.

DOTD said they closed the three crossings for safety concerns.
