Parents frustrated with bus cancellation

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - Nearly 650 students at St. George Catholic School in Baton Rouge had to find a different way to get to school Wednesday.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System buses they normally ride to get to class never ran Wednesday morning.

That's because school system leaders cancelled classes-- and bus transportation-- across the city when more than 1,050 teachers requested substitutes for their classrooms in order to protest at the Capitol.  They are not happy about Governor Bobby Jindal's education reform plan, which would end tenure, base employment on performance, and would give kids at failing schools vouchers to go to magnet schools.

Some parents were frustrated with the last-minute decision that came less than 24 hours before the next school day.

"It's inconvenient not to have a bus and just to have us told a day before," parent Theresa Chauncey said.

She and other parents had to battle traffic that was much heavier than normal in some areas, like Airline Highway.

"The roads were packed today.  Normally, I leave at 8 a.m. and I can get here in ten minutes, and now it was a 20 to 25 minute drive," Steve Lee told News 2.

Lee, like many parents News 2 spoke with at St. George, understands teachers' desire to have their voices heard at the Capitol, but hopes if they gather again, they will consider parents' and students' schedules.

"I'm unsure about taking of school to do it," Lee said.  "Maybe do it on a weekend or after hours."

School is back in session Thursday.
