Parents charged in death of bruised, bitten child
BATON ROUGE- East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office records show deputies visited the home of Xzayvion Riley at least three times in the last two years in connection with child welfare checks.
In August of 2010, deputies responded to a report that Riley's Father, Michael Robertson, was committing cruelty to a juvenile, but did not find enough evidence to arrest him. Today he and Riley's mother, Lavaughn Riley, were arrested for murder in connection with the beating death of their son.
In July of last year a babysitter contacted deputies to make a welfare check on the children, but reports show the kids were in good spirits and seemed to be in good health.
Later that year in September, a cousin called deputies saying the children were left at home alone, but Riley later came and picked them up without incident.
Today deputies released more information on how Riley was killed. According to a coroner's initial investigation, the 8-year old boy died from overwhelming infection caused by a ruptured bowel and blunt force trauma to his stomach.
"The mother admitted she had beat the child causing some marks to his body, as well as the sibling and the mother witnessing the father beat the child and said she even heard what sounded like the father throwing the child against the wall," said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokesperson for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.
Xzayvion's two sisters are now in protective custody.
