Parent goes the distance to take her kids to voucher school

WILSON - Two children attending Hosanna Christian Academy in Baton Rouge using school vouchers can't ride the bus to get there.

That's because they live in Wilson, which is about an hour-and-a-half away by car. Their mother, Brittany Davis, drives them each day because she wants them to escape failing schools in their home parish.

"The schools here in East Feliciana Parish were not well rounded to me," she told News 2. "They were focusing more on disciplining the kids instead of educating the kids."

East Feliciana Parish is one of many school districts still under desegregation orders by the state, though, and that led to a Department of Justice lawsuit seeking to stop the voucher program in 34 affected schools.

About 15 kids could be affected in Clinton, including Davis' children, which is leaving her frustrated.

"It would be cheating the kids," she said. "They didn't create the failing school system, the administration did."

A hearing for the voucher program is scheduled for Nov. 22 in U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
