BATON ROUGE - Legislators are targeting prostitutes and panhandlers with a bill that passed unanimously in the House.
This week, Rep. Austin Badon from New Orleans introduced HB 1158.
The bill would allow officers to arrest anyone found soliciting money or transportation from someone else. It was approved 86 to 0 and is now headed to the Senate for debate.
The bill would not only make panhandling illegal. Hitchhiking or even flagging down a car would be against the law as well.
Some question the bill's legality. Recently, the state supreme court struck down another anti-panhandling law, ruling that begging is protected form of free speech.
